To what extent are people in control of their own destiny?

I believe that people don't really control their own destiny, sure we can get of the path, but isn't that our destiny. And what is destiny really, I mean people think things happen for a reason and I have to agree, but do you really have a destiny or is it all part of someone's plan, sure that is being a little religious, but a lot of religions believe that a God or Gods, control what happens to us, whether it's bad karma or good karma, it all what you believe.
